Scholars in Service Kickoff

Date: Saturday, October 20th, 2018
Time: 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM
Location: Covenant House Georgia

Today we will learn more about Covenant House and the youth homelessness. How do youth become homeless at such a young age? How does Covenant house help youth get off the streets while empowering them and building their resiliency? Why is homelessness an issue in Atlanta, a city bustling with economic growth? Once we explore these topics we will also talk about nonprofits and how they provide the health and human safety net for Atlanta’s most vulnerable residents. We will discuss nonprofit trends and the essentials of fundraising for causes in which you are passionate.

Activities:

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand what life is like for a homeless youth
  • Examine the Opportunity Gap in Atlanta and the factors that lead to generational poverty
  • Understand the purpose and philosophy of fundraising
  • Create messaging that differentiates the nonprofit while appealing to the head and heart. 
  • Become familiar with internal vs. external case statements.

Immersion Night

Date: Thursday, November 8th, 2018
Time: 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Location: Covenant House Georgia

Tonight we will learn about special issues specific to youth homelessness from the subject experts at CHGA. Then we will break up into roundtables for a small group discussion with a Covenant House client. 

Objectives:

  • To hear firsthand the story of homelessness.
  • Learn about special topics related to youth homelessness
  • Use your learnings to create a compelling message for fundraising.

Holiday Service Night

Date: Wednesday, September 12th, 2018
Time: 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Location: Covenant House Georgia

Tonight we will learn about the importance of philanthropy and the picture of philanthropy in Atlanta.

We will hear from Joey Odom, the Greater Atlanta Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professional's 2017 "Philanthropic Leader of Tomorrow," about his personal philanthropic journey. Afterwards, the students will spend time with CHGA clients completing service projects for other populations.


Service Day and Closing Ceremony

Date: Monday, January 21st, 2019
Time: 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Covenant House Georgia

Today we will complete the capstone service project on CHGA's campus. Afterwards, the Scholars' families and friends will be invited to campus for a light lunch before the closing ceremony. The winner will be announced and awarded the $2,500 Scholars in Service Scholarship. The winner will also present the $2,500 matching scholarship to a college-bound CHGA client.
