Mother’s Day is a day our society uses to celebrate mothers from all walks of life. On Mother’s Day, many celebrate and honor the mothers, grandmothers, guardians, close friends, expectant mothers and other mother figures in their lives. This day is one we are able to celebrate at Covenant House Georgia, as 26% of our young ladies report having children and/or being pregnant when they enter our shelter.
While being pregnant can be an incredibly exciting time in a person’s life, it can be overwhelming and frightening to be pregnant while experiencing homelessness. This fact is not lost on our team at Covenant House Georgia as we work to ease the anxiety of pregnant mothers who come to our shelter by providing them with their immediate needs: a safe place to sleep, 3 meals a day, and medical services through our partnership with CAPN (Community Advanced Practice Nurses).
This year at Covenant House, 17% of the females who have sought shelter in our 90 day crisis program reported being mothers. 11% of the females who have entered our shelter this year have been pregnant at the time of entrance. While CHGA is not a mother-baby shelter, we care for our youth throughout the duration of their pregnancy and help get them to find a home once their baby is born. Our team’s favorite moment is seeing our youth light up when they hold the little one that they’ve protected for 9 months. Our case managers continue to work with these new moms even after they have left our care to make sure that mom & baby have everything they need to thrive – and to receive some sweet newborn hugs during visits! We love to see these kids grow and learn, while we watch our youth develop superb parenting skills.
The reason we are able to care and love on our expectant and new moms so well is only due to the generosity of our donors. Pregnancy while experiencing homelessness is made easier when our young moms know they can rely on their Covenant House family to provide them with necessary items. This weekend, we would love for you to shower our mothers with support by purchasing items off of our Mother’s Day Wish List! All of the items on this list will go directly to pregnant youth staying in our crisis shelter. These purchases will help make their pregnancy journey more comfortable as they transition into a new chapter of their lives.
